Vienna Restaurants

Viennese cuisine tends to have southeast European influences, and there are many traditional dishes you can try in Vienna's restaurants, including Wiener Schnitzel, Goulash, Kaiserschmaru and Palatschinken. Austria is also famous for its coffee houses and the delicious cakes and pastries they serve. Austrian wine is widespread in Vienna, and in addition, traditional drinks such as Schnapps, Enzian (brandy) and Bowle (summer punch) can be enjoyed.

Vienna Etiquette and Customs

Greeting someone in Vienna

People should be addressed by their title, along with a handshake. It is usual to take a small gift if you are invited to a colleague's house, such as a bottle of wine or box of chocolates.

Tipping advice

It is customary to offer a tip of around 10 to 15 percent to taxi drivers and attendants at theatres and cloakrooms. Restaurant bills usually include a service charge but a little extra should be given in addition. Porters and bellboys expect around 10 ATS.

Vienna dress code

Business attire consists of suits for both men and women. Outside business hours, Austrians are generally casual dressers, although a jacket and tie is usually worn to exclusive restaurants and smart clothing is definitely the norm for a night out to the theatre or opera.

Local Customs

Since it was founded 45 years ago, Kammeroper has proven to play a major role in Vienna's success as a City of Music. The summer open-air festival "Mozart in Schönbrum" and the annual staging at Schönbrum Schlosstheater have always been part of it.
The International Film Festival takes place every October.
